PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)

Platelet rich plasma is a form of regenerative medicine that uses your body's stem cells to stimulate regeneration of collagen and elastin. Because it is autologous (made from your own) blood, it is completely natural with very few risks or side effects.

PRP contains growth factors which are responsible for wound healing, collagen production, vascular regrowth and connective tissue regeneration. Due to these remarkable properties, its use in the medical industry has been recognised for many years and research is ongoing.

In aesthetics, we use PRP for indications including fine lines, skin laxity and dark circles under the eyes, globally on the face, neck and décolletage, to improve skin tone and complexion, and in the scalp to support hair follicles for thinning hair.

A series of three treatments is recommended initially to achieve optimal results.

Platelet-Rich Plasma FAQs

  • As with all treatments offered at Fé Clinic, we require you to undergo a consultation to review your concerns, conduct a medical assessment, and determine suitability for treatment. If you decide to proceed, we can do the first PRP treatment on the same day as your consultation.

Following the consultation we take a small amount of blood, similar to having a blood test. The blood is then spun in a centrifuge and separated to extract the platelet rich plasma. This beautiful golden liquid is then injected manually using tiny fine needles or infused using a needling device into the area of skin being treated.

Once in the tissue, platelets activate and release growth factors which stimulate cellular growth, the formation of new blood vessels and production of new collagen and elastin.

Although some discomfort is expected with any injectable treatment, we use a prescription strength local anaesthetic cream to keep you relaxed and comfortable.

We apply a hydrating mask following all facial treatments to soothe the area, and finish with a nourishing balm to protect newly treated skin.

  • Connective tissue formation, skin tightening and rejuvenation are a gradual process. You can expect to see results after 4-8 weeks.

Due to the regenerative action of PRP, results are cumulative and continue getting better over time and can be maintained with annual treatment.

As PRP is derived from your own blood, optimal results will be achieved through maintaining good health, a balanced diet and not smoking.

  • You may resume normal activities immediately following treatment.

We will discuss aftercare in detail during your appointment. General considerations with aftercare include protecting the treated area from the sun, thorough application of broad spectrum sunscreens, keeping the skin hydrated by applying moisturiser, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle to ensure the quality of your PRP.

  • The beauty of using an autologous product (your own blood) means there is no risk for allergy and it is generally well tolerated and with minimal side effects.

Following treatment, the skin may feel warm and tight for the first 24 hours. Mild swelling is common and bruising is possible with any injectable treatment. If treating around the eyes, this area may look and feel puffy for a couple of days. If you have had needling, you may experience redness which will settle within a few hours of treatment.

Unfortunately, patients with certain skin diseases such as active SLE, those undergoing active chemotherapy, liver disease and abnormal platelet function and those who are taking anticoagulant medications such as warfarin and heparin should not have this treatment. We will discuss any contraindications during your consultation.
