Dermal Filler

The ageing process causes changes to facial structures. Combined with environmental exposures,  gravity and the reduction of collagen and elastin this results in sagging, hollowing, and deepening of lines. Dermal filler is used to create structure and restore volume, resulting in balanced, harmonious beautification and restoration.

Dermal filler is made of hyaluronic acid, a hydrophilic molecule formulated into the range of gels we call filler. This is injected into the facial tissue to sculpt and soften areas affected by ageing. It can also be used to sharpen facial definition in areas such as the cheek, jaw line and lip.

At Fé Clinic, we use a range of brands of filler which have been selected for their quality, safety and results. There are many areas of the face that can be improved with dermal filler, and our approach is to always consider the full face with our assessment.

We are highly qualified and skilled in our art, and because we have your best interests at heart, we will always address the underlying causes of a concern as well as the effect.

Dermal Filler FAQs

  • Prior to any dermal filler treatment, a full consultation is required. This will involve clinical photography, skin assessment and review of your concerns and expectations to determine a treatment plan that is tailored to achieving your individual goals. This is also an opportunity to pick our brain, and we are happy to answer any questions you may have.

At Fé Clinic we are medical professionals and we take your safety very seriously. We will ask about your medical history, current medication, allergies and previous treatment, and we will review this every time we see you.

We like you to really consider your options, so generally if you decide to proceed, we will schedule your initial filler treatment at a separate appointment to your consultation (although some exceptions can be made).

Treatment time varies between 30 - 90 minutes. The dermal filler gel is administered through small needles or canulas using a variety of techniques which may differ between treatments and practitioners. We know treatment can be a little unnerving, especially if it's your first time so we work at your pace to ensure you feel safe and supported. Although all our fillers contain local anaesthetic within the gel, it is not uncommon for dermal filler treatment to involve some discomfort. A prescription strength numbing cream may also be used in certain areas to keep discomfort to a minimum.

The anaesthetic lasts 2 - 3 hours and, following this, the treated area may feel tender for a couple of days. You may be more aware of the filler for the first 3 - 4 weeks as the filler settles into the tissue. A follow up consultation is recommended 4 weeks post treatment to review results and plan for the next phase.

  • Following treatment, results can be appreciated immediately. Expect to have some degree of swelling and be prepared for the possibility of bruising.

Rome was not built in a day. Although the results of each treatment can be seen immediately, it is important to understand that reaching your desired outcome may require several treatments over several months. To achieve a natural, sustainable aesthetic outcome, we often start by supporting foundational structures, before moving to refining finer details.

Getting the most out of your injectable treatments will be supported if the skin is also considered. Think of dermal filler as a mattress, and the skin as the bed covers. If the bed covers are old, stained and crinkled, you may not notice a brand new mattress underneath. Active skin care works on the most superficial skin layers, optimising cellular functions to support a youthful glow.

  • Following treatment, normal activities can be resumed. We will provide you with detailed verbal and written aftercare advice at your appointment. The general aftercare precautions will include the following instructions:

Do not rub or touch the area for 4 - 6 hours post treatment.

Avoid makeup for 24 hours post treatment.

Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours post treatment.

Strictly no other skin treatments for 2 weeks.

No dental treatment for 1 month following treatment.

  • All medical treatments, including cosmetic treatments, carry some element of risk. It is important you are aware of these before you consent to treatment. We will discuss risks and potential complications in fine detail during your consultation.

Common normal side effects that will improve in days to weeks include:

Swelling, redness, bruising, lumpy or unevenness, pain or discomfort.

Rare complications include allergic reaction, formation of nodules or delayed onset granuloma, secondary bacterial or viral infections (e.g HSV), ischaemia and blindness (extremely rare).

Dermal filler is not suitable for people who are pregnant or breast feeding, are currently unwell with any type of infection, or have a history of autoimmune disease.

Medical professionals are required to uphold regulatory standards, and you should expect to receive the same level of care for a cosmetic treatment as you would for a medical treatment. In the unlikely event of an adverse reaction, we ensure we are available to provide support management and guidance through to resolution.

  • Dermal filler treatment is priced per syringe of filler used. For multi-syringe treatments, pricing per syringe is reduced. Our pricing takes into account the products used and the experience of the injector.

During your consultation we will make an assessment and provide a quote for the product you will require for each stage of your treatment plan. With each stage of treatment, alterations may be made to the plan.

Important pre-treatment information

Down time

Dermal filler often requires some down time. Please factor this in when making your appointment.

Are you fit and well?

You must be well on the day of treatment. Any form of cold/flu, other infection, inflammation, or an unmanaged autoimmune condition may increase the chance of side effects, and treatment must be delayed. If you are unsure please contact us to discuss whether treatment is appropriate.

Pregnancy or Breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unfortunately you cannot be treated with dermal filler. Please complete your journey before you book in for treatment.

Vitamins, Supplements and Medications

Many vitamins, supplements and medications can cause thinning of the blood. This causes you to be more prone to bruising. If you do take any blood thinning supplements, vitamins or medications, please avoid them for two weeks prior to your injectable appointment if possible. Examples include, green tea, fish oils, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Voltaren etc, high dose vitamin E, gingko biloba, turmeric and alcohol.

Dental Work

We will not be able to treat you if you have had dental work two weeks prior or have any planned one month after any dermal filler treatment.

Other Skin Treatments

We advise that you do not have any other skin treatments, facial treatments, waxing, IPL, laser treatments, eyebrow treatments, massaging, pressing, or leaning on the treated area for at least two weeks following dermal filler treatment.

International travel

You cannot fly internationally until one week after your filler treatment.

Vaccinations

You will need to wait two weeks before or after the covid vaccination to have dermal filler treatment.

No makeup

Please arrive at your appointment free from makeup. To reduce the risk of infection, no makeup can be worn for 24 hours following treatment.
